Role of Deputy Mayor

The 1972 Local Government Act requires a Council to appoint, from among its members, a Deputy Mayor or Vice-Chairman. They hold the Office until the election of a new Deputy Mayor at the next Annual Meeting of the Council.

The Deputy Mayor presides over meetings of the Council in the absence of the Mayor.

The Deputy Mayorship is an apprenticeship year for the role of Mayor. The Deputy Mayor supports the Mayor in his activities, deputising when required.
